Neogeography and GIS

Neogeography is the fast-developing field derived from traditional map and Geographical Information Systems (GIS), unifying them with network and web technologies the results of which are rapid and low-cost geo-information and map-making. Open Source datasets such as OpenStreetMap, publicly accessible government data such as Landsat satellite images and STRM elevation data, and user-generated data from portable GPS units.

Using these rich sources of no cost data and free or low-cost GIS programs, a huge range of outputs can readily be built including:

  • Traditional printed maps, without traditional licensing costs
  • Online maps and "mashups" overlaying proprietary or other company specific data over Google Maps similar slippy-maps.
  • Visualisations allowing users to fly-over and interact with landscapes, viewing data in ways that would simply be impossible otherwise.
